Language pathways
Lycée Français Jules Verne welcomes a diverse, multilingual and international community within an English-speaking environment. As an accredited French school and member of the AEFE network, we offer the best of both worlds: the excellence of the French curriculum combined with a strong international outlook.
A French School in an International Environment
French is the primary language of teaching and learning at Lycée Jules Verne. It is the language used in the classroom, in school life, and in formal assessments and examinations.
At the same time, English, as the language of the host country, is naturally integrated into students’ experience. This unique setting allows children to become confidently bilingual, both inside and outside the classroom.
Tailored language pathways for every student.
We recognize that every child’s journey is different. That’s why, in close collaboration with teaching staff, we offer structured and flexible language pathways, inspired by the AEFE’s PARLE program, designed to support each student’s profile and ambitions.
In the general pathway, students build a strong and confident command of French, which is the language of instruction, while also developing a high level of English, the language of their everyday environment in South Africa. This is where we introduce and build skills in a third language.
Students are introduced to a second foreign language from Grade 6, helping them make an informed choice as this becomes a compulsory subject. Students can also choose to further strengthen their language skills through additional options in Spanish (with a focus on European language and culture) or in English through the English+ program.
International English Section (SIA)
The International English Section offers students the opportunity to develop advanced English skills while following the French curriculum. This pathway promotes both linguistic and academic excellence, preparing students for success in an international context.
In primary and middle school, students deepen their understanding of English through the study of language, literature, and American culture. This approach fosters both linguistic precision and cultural awareness.
In the final years of high school (grade 10 to 12), students who choose this pathway prepare for the French International Baccalaureate (BFI). This internationally recognized qualification opens access to higher education in France and around the world.
Français +: Support for Non-French-Speaking Students
Students who have not yet reached the required B1 level of French benefit from targeted support in French as a Foreign language (FLE) as well as French for academic purposes (FLS).
This support helps students progressively build confidence and fluency in French (essential for academic success) while developing the vocabulary and language structures needed across all subjects.
The program may last up to two years, depending on the student’s needs and progress. Active support from families outside of school is strongly encouraged and makes a significant difference.
Please note: The level of French required for admission to Lycée Jules Verne varies depending on the grade applied for and is assessed as part of the application process.
In addition, students enrolled in the Français + program may not join the International English Section).
A language approach that supports success
All of the school’s language programmes are designed to:
• promote multilingualism as a strength,
• support students who are new to French,
• guide students towards strong academic French proficiency,
• prepare students for further studies in France and internationally
At Lycée Français Jules Verne, multilingualism is not only part of the curriculum. It is a key driver of student success, cultural understanding, and international citizenship.
